I’d read about Balthazar previously. As we’d been planning a morning in SoHo, it seemed the perfect choice for a NY breakfast. The environment is a perfect recreation of a Parisian bistro. I suspect many of the antiques were shipped in from France. It creates a warm, comfortable atmosphere that is immediately welcoming.
The food was good if not excellent. I had the buckwheat crepes stuffed with egg and sausage. Tina ordered the egg filled pastry. The flavor was good, as was the presentation and service. I’d likely order it again, should I find myself in the neighborhood.
I’d be more enthusiastic if the cost hadn’t been too high. I’m no stranger to expensive breakfasts, and there have been many moreso on this particular trip. I just didn’t feel that this breakfast quite hit the right value mark. It lacked the panache I would have expected from the expertly designed interior. Perhaps dinner is their specialty as breakfast, while good, did not seem to be their “A” game.
