Our last meal in New York (on this trip, at least) was DBGB Kitchen & Bar. I’d read many, many good reviews so it was another must-visit on my list. We arrived a bit early, at noon, for our lunch and the place was deserted. Even so, the staff invited us in as welcome guests.
The restaurant is beautifully appointed. The atmosphere is casual without being cheap. Tina noticed a ring of bronzed pots and pans, each dedicated to notable chefs. The kitchen was open, encircling the dining room on two sides. The tones were dark but the lighting kept the mood bright and open.
We started with two appetizers: tuna tartare and chicken and veal pate. Both were flavorful, generous, and very enjoyable. The pate was very firm, almost crumbly. I enjoyed the near-dryness of the pate, especially in combination with a very nice whole-grain bread.
Tina went for a nice shrimp pasta and I did a burger. While the pasta was very tasty it paled in comparison to the burger. First, I should note that (despite the picture above) the burger was modestly portioned (thankfully). The beef was topped with pork belly confit and fresh condiments. All this was sandwiched in a fresh onion-brioche bun. The beef was fresh and very lean; the red color was vibrant and very appetizing. And the fries, well, they were puffy yet crispy -- absolutely delicious. All of this was masterfully arranged -- it was a shame to mess it up. But of course, this was edible art. And, I think, it may be the best hamburger you will ever have. It’s certainly reason enough for me to return to New York for an encore performance.
