I don’t know what to expect, here. We board the QM2 for a one-week cruise from New York to Southampton (just north of London). Having never been the “crusing” type, it’s hard to imagine how we’ll spend seven days on a ship. We’re loading up the iPad and will be sure to pack plenty of more conventional reading supplies. But, still, seven days?
Well I’m not too worried. For starters, it’s a pretty swank boat. No shorts, no flip flops, and even a few black tie dinners. The QM2 will host a visiting speaker series and even has a planetarium. Beyond the opulence, the QM2 is huge -- 3,000 people will sail the Trans-Atlantic voyage. There are restaurants, bars, libraries, and WiFi.
Our small but comfortable cabin will have a balcony overlooking the port side of the ship. With a king-sized bed and sitting area, it will be a quiet respite from the crowds. And, really, that’s why we’re taking the QM2. It will be a one-week decompression. We’ll leave our daily lives behind and arrive refreshed, ready for a four week march through Europe.
Of the entire trip, this is the least planned -- and that’s by design. We’re just going to kick back and relax. And, of course, write about it for all of you.
