Our second dinner in New York was the popular Peasant. Self-described as “simplicity” we were looking forward to a modern take on rustic food. The space is lovely. Painted brick walls break away into illuminated alcoves, making for a romantic yet vibrant mood. The kitchen it visible at back, with the wood-fired oven burning brightly. The aroma of rich, Italian spices fills the air with anticipation.
We started with fresh mozzarella and tomato topped by a few basil leaves. The taste was incredibly light and fresh. My wife ordered the gnocchi and I had the orecchiette con salcicce (pictured above). The gnocchi was delicious, with a near creamy texture. My pasta with sausage was rich, hearty, and a subtle but noticeable spiciness. It’s definitely a meal we would order again.
The service was perfunctory if not occasionally chilly. Everyone was polite, so I can’t quite complain. But I’ve felt far more welcome at other restaurants so, perhaps, I’m a bit spoiled.
